What is Yoga Philosophy?

About The Yoga Philosophy Course

The 100 Hour Yoga Philosophy Course in India is a comprehensive course, which covers various asanas, meditation, Pranayama, and Yoga Nidra techniques. You will also touch down upon mantras, diet, and lifestyle. You will learn about Yama and Niyama in an intrinsic way, so that you apply the teachings to your life. Yoga According to Upanishads and Mahabharata

You may already know that yoga is 5,000 years old. However, there is no exact date. However, some of the earliest works that mention about yoga are the Upanishads and Mahabharata. Upanishads are often called as the exact source of yoga teachings. After you read about the same, you move onto the teachings mentioned in the Mahabharata. In the Mahabharata, you will discover about the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. You will learn about Krishna’s teachings, as a part of the course. Krishna’s teachings are intertwined with Yogic concepts.

Yoga According To The Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Yogi Swatmarama had penned down Hatha Yoga Pradipika sometime in the 1300s. The title of the text book suggests ‘light on Ha and Tha practices.’ Ha stands for the sun and Tha stands for the moon here. It is regarded as a tantric practice, that brings about the union of two forces. Tha Hatha Yoga Pradipika is one of the most detailed manuals on the correct practices of Hatha Yoga. All the texts mentioned herein leads to self-realization.

Four Stages of Life

According to philosophical texts, there are four stages in a person’s life. They are student, householder, forest dweller, and renunciate.

The student phase is better described as Brahmacharya stage, which depicts chastity. The householder stage is better described as Grihastha, where one performs all his worldly duties. In the next stage, the man heads to the forests, for solitude and meditation. It is the stage, when one deepens one’s own dharma. Finally, the renunciate phase arrives, which is called as Sannyasa.

Pancha Koshas – The Five Bodies

There are five layers surrounding a human being. They start from the most external one, called Annamaya. It is the physical body. It is also called the food sheath. Then comes the Pranamaya, which is the life energy sheath. It drives the stagnant energy, from one part of the body to another. So, that the incumbent experiences vitality. After this external layer, comes the Manomaya, which deals with the mind. It represents your emotions. The Vijnanamaya comes next and represents the astral body. This layer facilitates detachment. The deepest layer is called Anandamaya. You will study about all the different layers of the body, in great detail.

7 Stages Of Awareness

According to Vedic and Sanatan Philosophy, a yogi goes through seven stages. The first four stages are centred around one’s liberation from the results of his thoughts. And in the last three stages, the yogi experiences liberation from the thoughts themselves. You will study about the seven stages of awareness as a part of Yoga Philosophy.

Eight Limbs of Raja Yoga

You will find a mention of the 8 limbs of yoga in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. The same acts as a guide for life. The 8 limbs are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. You will learn about this Ashtanga Yoga system, as a part of the philosophy classes.

4 Paths of Yoga

Every individual is different from the other, so they have the choice of following four different pathways. They are-

  • Karma Yoga or the pathway of action
  • Jnana Yoga or the pathway of knowledge
  • Bhakti Yoga, or the pathway of devotion.
  • Raja Yoga or the pathway of discipline

All four pathways lead to the same goal. You will reach the supreme soul, after walking on different pathways. You can receive ‘Ananda’, if you practice this consistently. You will learn how to incorporate different lessons from each path, to reach the ultimate union.

Three Bodies

Within the context of Yoga Philosophy, it is said that each human being has three bodies. They are the physical body, astral body, and the causal body. The first one is the body, which is visible to all. The astral body is the one, which feels the pain and sufferings. The last one is the subtle body, or the seed body. Tantra Yoga

As a part of the philosophy classes, you will learn about the real meaning of Tantra. It is mainly based around non-duality. By practicing Tantra Yoga, you will understand the emphasis on self-knowledge and internal connections. Asana, Kumbhaka, Mudra, Nada, and Deity embodiment are the five parts of study.

Reincarnation

You will discover that reincarnation is true. The doctrine is common to several religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The doctrine states that the soul enters the life cycle, not as a fresh creation, but an old one. All the impressions of previous births are present in the Chitta, in some form or the other.
