Jesus Christ: A Yogi of the East?
Did you know that Jesus was one of the greatest yoga masters in history?
Many may know him only as a central figure of Christianity, but deeper spiritual traditions—particularly those found in India’s ancient yogic teachings—reveal another side to Jesus: that of a self-realized yogi, one who walked the inner path toward God through discipline, meditation, and direct experience.
Jesus and His Journey in India
Between the ages of 12 and 30, it is said that Jesus traveled to the East, studying under great Himalayan sages like Maha Avatar Babaji and receiving initiation into Kriya Yoga—a powerful technique for awakening spiritual consciousness.
He immersed himself in the Vedas, the sacred texts of India, and came to realize the eternal truth:
Yogananda’s Vision: Jesus as a Mystic Yogi
In his masterful work, The Second Coming of Christ, Paramahansa Yogananda unveils the esoteric teachings of Jesus, showing how his message aligns with the yoga tradition of self-realization.
For example, when Jesus says:
Yogananda explains this as an invitation to enter the state of divine consciousness—what yoga calls samadhi—through inner stillness and meditation.
Heaven, Consciousness & the Inner Journey
Mystical Christianity, as revealed by Yogananda, teaches that:
- The Kingdom of Heaven is not a far-off place, but a state of cosmic consciousness available here and now.
- The “many mansions” (John 14:2) are realms of existence—lokas—that the soul travels through on its journey to enlightenment.
- The “serpent lifted in the wilderness” (John 3:14) is a reference to kundalini, the spiritual energy at the base of the spine that rises through yoga practice.
Jesus as a Guru, a Yogic Teacher
Just like Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, Jesus:
- Taught meditation and self-discipline as the way to know God.
- Guided his disciples not just with words, but with transmitted spiritual power, just as a guru guides the chela (disciple).
- Knew the inner science of energy, consciousness, and divine union.
Reclaiming the Universal Jesus
Jesus was born in the East, trained in its mystical traditions, and lived a life of spiritual awakening. To truly understand his message, we must see him as a universal figure, not bound by culture or doctrine.
This Easter, Reflect Inward
Rather than only looking outward for salvation, yoga invites us to look within, to meditate, and to connect with the divine already present in our soul.
This is the true resurrection—awakening to the eternal, blissful, unchanging Self.
Happy Easter again to all of you!
With love and light,
The Shree Hari Yoga Family
